Did you know that denim jackets have a rich history of more than a century? Yes. It is a classic outwear which is made in denim fabric. The denim jacket is also known as jean jackets.
The US military wore it in world war II. Furthermore, Elvis Presley and Marylin Monroe gave a boost to the vintage denim jackets as a fashion trend in their time.
Origin of the Vintage Denim Jackets
Levi Strauss introduced the denim jackets in the 1880s. He is a German American fashion designer. The Levi Strauss and Co. is found by Levi Strauss in Francisco California in 1853. The Levi Strauss wanted to invent a outwear which is durable and comfortable.
Hardworking men and women could not find better clothing that suits their professions and day to day life. The available clothing was delicate and lesser durable. Therefore, they were not suitable for repeated usage. Levis Strauss saw this market gap and decided to fill it with his vintage denim jacket designs. He used the same denim materials that he used for the denim jeans.
The target markets of the vintage denim jacket were labours such as coal miners, railroad workers, farmers, cowboys and gold prospectors etc. The jean jackets had a good demand among these working-class citizens due to the durability and strength of the denim fabric. Even in today’s fashion market denim jeans and jackets are considered as everyday wear which saves a lot of money due to long term usage.
The Rise of The Vintage Denim Jackets
From the start, the jean jackets started to become famous in the fashion market. There were only a limited number of coats and jackets were available. But they were also for the formal and white-collar market. So, as we mentioned it was easier for denim jackets to receive attention from the people who were looking for casual jackets.
Some of the famous celebrities in the 20th century started to wear denim jackets. Some of them are John Lennon, Elvis Presley and James Dean. Due to this celebrity enforcement, the denim jackets received more attention around the world. In the recent past, Kanye West also mentioned that he also wears at least one vintage denim jacket once a month.
In the 1960s, a few variations of the denim jackets were designed by Levi Strauss. The Rock stars, Truck drivers, ranches and rebels were the target market of those jean jacket designs. These vintage denim jackets were known as Type III jackets in 1967. But in present, it is known as “Trucker jackets”.
How to style a vintage denim jacket?
The best way to wear a vintage denim jacket for me is with fancy trousers (*with print or bright colour) and extremely high heeled sandals. (*go for an elegant shape not to make the bottom part of your outfit heavy). Compliment your look with a sheer or see-through top and elongated necklace. I hope it’s time now that everyone’s noticed that we don’t wear statement bulky necklaces anymore?! I highly recommend going for minimalistic tender accessories this Summer.
I’d be really happy to have a REAL vintage denim jacket. Let’s say my dad’s jacket from the 80s’ or 90s’, but unfortunately, I don’t have one. What about you? Do you have any vintage jackets? Do you know a history of them?
