Shake Up Your Health And Fitness Routine

Your health and fitness routine is going to need a shake up from time to time if you’re going to avoid getting bored. Letting yourself get bored of your routine is a sure way to skip sessions, eat junk, and wonder where all of your progress is disappearing to.

Winter is a particularly hard season to navigate when it comes to your health and fitness – or even just the cooler months in general. People tend to want to cover up in layer upon layer of clothing, so does it really matter if you skip a session or have a slice of cake? Yes and no – health and fitness should be all about balance, but you don’t want to end up starting all over again and cursing yourself when you know warm weather is just around the corner and you’re ready to shed those layers.

Here, you’ll find plenty of pointers for shaking up your health and fitness routine. Take a look and see how you can alter your routine to make it more suitable for you during the cold season:

  1. Find A New Plan That You Like The Look Of

Sticking to the same plan for too long is a quick way to burn out and get bored. You shouldn’t switch your plans all the time, as it’ll be impossible to measure your progress in terms of strength, endurance, etc. However, you should be changing your plan perhaps every 6-8 weeks. You can go a little longer, maybe up to 12, but after this point it’s likely you’re going to get bored. You could do alternate weeks if you don’t want to do the same plan every week to begin with, too.

Find a new plan that suits your training style and ability levels. You can buy one from a certified personal trainer, but you must make sure that they are qualified and not going to give you a ‘cookie cutter’ plan that won’t work for you. Getting excited about a new plan is a great way to get back into your health and fitness routine.

In the summer, we tend to have more energy. Maybe you want to train 4, 5, and even 6 times per week in summer. Providing you’re enjoying it and allowing yourself at least one full rest day, that’s fabulous! However, it’s normal to lose energy a little during winter. If you want to drop a session, do it. Don’t feel guilty about it. You’re still training, and that extra rest day should do you good.

You’re not going to want to run outside or turn up to the gym in tiny shorts and a t-shirt when it’s cold outside, no matter how warm you get while training. Consider treating yourself to new workout gear, such as long sleeved tops, new leggings, and new hoodies. The new workout wardrobe may be motivation enough to get you back in the gym – but don’t spend hundreds on new outfits and end up not going! If you’re already not in a consistent routine, it’s likely new workout gear alone won’t force you to go, and you’ll have drawers full of clothing that isn’t being used.

Treat yourself to a new workout accessory and see if that helps you. There are some wonderful activity trackers on the market today that will track your heart rate, steps, calories burned, and even your sleep!

Do some comparisons online and see if you can find one to suit your workout style. Alternatively, you could invest in a quality pair of headphones to block out the world while you train!

You might think you know all about health and fitness, but the best thing you can know is that you’ll never know everything. It’s always a good idea to stay up to date and continue to expand your knowledge on health and fitness. Read books on the subject, look at research, and watch YouTube videos. You could even take a certification if you’d like to help other people. You can become an online personal trainer here, or do something on nutrition instead. There’s always something new to learn!

If you like to do classes, or even if you’ve never done a class before, how about trying a new one? You could try your hand at martial arts and learn a brand new skill, or even try something more relaxing, like yoga.

Group classes can be a great way to switch things up and stay interested in your training, but they are not usually the best way to ensure overall health and fitness unless you’re combining resistance, cardio, and flexibility with various classes. Doing just one of those could mean not performing at your very best!\

Maybe your gym is actually boring you. The same equipment and the same faces day in, day out can get a little tiresome. Sometimes, all you need is a new environment to get that spark and love of exercise back. See if there’s another one in your area you can try out. Explore different classes there and different equipment. You might want to alternate between two gyms, or even switch completely.

During winter, it’s easy to overindulge, as the cooler weather makes us want to eat more. It’s natural; our bodies are looking to store more fat to keep us warm. That doesn’t mean you have to eat calorific comfort foods every night, though! Figure out how you can make healthier versions of your favourite comfort foods. Instead of a regular pizza, try topping a wrap and toasting it in the oven. Doing things like this are great to satisfy cravings without going overboard.

While you don’t want to spend each night eating your bodyweight in food, don’t feel guilty if you do indulge a little. Health and fitness should be all about a balanced approach, so cultivating a healthy, balanced mindset is essential.

Although eating more natural foods will help you to stay healthy and reach your goals, you don’t have to ‘eat clean’ 100% of the time. In fact, a little of what you fancy can keep you sane. Just listen to your body and stop when you’re hungry. What’s the point in living if you’re only going to deprive yourself of the things you love?

If you can’t be happy with your body before you embark on a health and fitness journey, you may end up keeping that negative mindset even when you’ve reached your goals. Again, your mindset is everything. Learn to love your body for everything it does for you, and not just the way it looks. Your value is not based on your body shape or type, your weight, or your body fat percentage. You are valuable just because you are here. Remember that!

You may not want to spend as long in the gym anymore, and that’s fine. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all. Even a half an hour workout can be effective if you keep your heart rate up and stay focused. Don’t sacrifice your social life, work life, or time with friends to work out – unless your dream is to be a serious athlete and compete. Congratulate yourself for getting off the couch at all. You’re doing great!

Knowing what your goals are is key if you’re going to get anywhere, and your goals shouldn’t be the same year round. Let’s say at the start of the year you wanted to get lean, and you’ve lost a significant amount of body fat. Your goal now could be to work on building lean muscle, or even to maintain your new look. Remember, to maintain the way you look, you don’t have to stay in a calorie deficit. You simply need to find your maintenance level calories. So yes, you can look and feel great and still eat real food that you love!

    Great post babe. I find it hard to get back to a routine after being out of it from travelling. I actually started looking for new gyms this week and need to add new routines and classes to rehab my shoulder. I always love treating myself to new gym clothes!
