Interview with Sonia Deasy – Pestle & Mortar Cosmetics

As a busy mother of five, Sonia Deasy needed a simple, effective skincare routine she could count on. And she wasn’t alone. While working alongside her husband, acclaimed international photographer Padraic Deasy, she saw firsthand how dry, dull and patchy his subjects’ skin looked up close. She knew there had to be a better solution. So she began to research one herself, working closely with her sister – who just so happened to hold a degree in biochemistry.

Together they began to develop a formula that followed Sonia’s own less-is-more approach to beauty. Always in favour of a natural look over layers of makeup, Sonia was determined to create a line of no-fuss skincare – free of harsh chemicals and worrisome ingredients – that left women looking and feeling their best. Today, I am sharing my interview with Sonia Deasy {owner, Pestle&Mortar}. I hope you will enjoy it.

  1. Sonia, when and how did you decide to create Pestle & Mortar and what inspired you? And how did you come up with the name of the brand?

Whilst working alongside my husband in his portrait photography business, I noticed how dry and dull a lot of the subjects’ skin looked close up. I was also travelling a lot at the time, and I was frustrated that there didn’t seem to be a simple and effective skincare range on the market. Coming from 6 generations of Indian Herbalists, the obvious solution for me was to research and develop my own brand of skincare. I wanted to combine nature and science to create a range of no-fuss skincare. Hence Pestle & Mortar!

The process of naming my business was as important to me as naming one of my children. One night, as I sat around the table after dinner with my husband and children, having yet another ‘what should I name this business?’ discussion, my eye was drawn to the pestle & mortar that lives on my kitchen countertop. I shouted ‘Pestle & Mortar!’ I wanted the name of my business to reflect my own motivations – namely simplicity, natural solutions and a less-is-more philosophy. Natural healing principles were instilled in myself and my siblings from a young age – whenever there was an ailment in my family, my father remedied it naturally.

  1. Who is your muse/audience and why do you think your products are a great fit for their lifestyle?

I view my audience as being any woman who cares about her skin and is busy! Women who are looking for a range of skincare that is simple to use, clearly explained and provides the desired results with consistent use. I created my products for these women. Pestle & Mortar products fuse natural healing remedies with science in formulations that are free from all skincare nasties. The focus is on high-quality ingredients combined with cutting-edge actives in products that are easy to apply, suitable for all skin types and affordable.

  1. I have noticed, all of your products are divided black/white – is there any concept behind this packaging? (i guess, white is for the day, black is for the night, is this correct?)

Products packaged in black are for night time use only. Products packaged in white can be used day and night, as the user requires. This system de-codes and simplifies complicated multi-step routines.

  1. How long does it take to develop and produce one single product?

On average, it takes 18 months!

Pure Hyaluronic Serum pestle and mortar

  1. What product is the best seller? Do you know why it is?

Our best seller is our first, and now an iconic product, Pure Hyaluronic Serum. I think possibly because it is a multitasking serum which truly delivers. Also, Hyaluronic Acid is an essential ingredient for anyone serious about skincare.

  1. How do you decide what product is next to produce?

There is a list in my head a mile long! I know the market very well at this stage, and because I travel a lot and attend many cosmetic conferences, I know what’s out there, what people are looking for and what would work for Pestle & Mortar.

  1. What are your plans for expanding the business in the next 3-5 years? Do you see Pestle & Mortar sold internationally?

At the moment, I’m thinking only of expansion as opposed to selling up! We are actively expanding distribution in the USA and we are planning to launch into Asia in the coming months. That’s enough to think about right now!

  1. How big is your team? Is it growing?

Currently, the team is 20 people and growing.
